PHYSICAL THERAPY SERVICES
Physical Therapy is the treatment or management of physical disability or malfunction through the use of mechanical force or movement, exercise therapy, or electrotherapy, without the use of medicine or surgery. At Frederick Sport and Spine, each of our locations have specialized therapists who are experts at identifying your unique therapy needs. Many have earned advanced degrees, certifications, and credentials to best treat your condition. We listen to your individual needs and pride ourselves in the ability to develop a program specifically designed to achieve your rehabilitation goals.
Our goal is for you to become your own physical therapist.
There are countless reasons why you may require physical therapy. These reasons range from post-operative rehabilitation, acute or chronic pain, back pain, and work-related injury recovery. Or you may be an athlete recovering from an injury or seeking to improve your performance.
Whatever your needs may be, our approach and philosophy are simple: working hard together with your best interest in mind.
AREAS OF SPECIALTY
SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY AND REHABILITATION
Frederick Sport and Spine’s sports medicine program is more than sports injury rehabilitation. It’s taking the athlete from the clinic to competition. This comprehensive approach makes us different. Powered by exceptionally adept, highly effective athletic trainers and physical therapists, we can prevent, evaluate, treat and rehabilitate the acute and chronic injuries and conditions that can result from high-impact, high-repetition occupations and sports activities, including: torn ACLs, meniscus and rotator cuffs, musculoskeletal issues, sprains and strains, tendonitis, bursitis and more, whether it’s for professional athletes, leisure sport participants or the senior center residents next door. Our therapists are well versed in the latest modalities, including Kinesio Taping, and equally skilled at adapting the latest treatment options for each person’s needs.
POST-OPERATIVE REHABILITATION
Frederick Sport and Spine ensures that each patient’s treatment is individualized and specific, with achievable goals both short-term and long. We concentrate on strength, function, and mobility following your procedure. Whether you are facing total joint replacements, ligament and tendon repairs, ORIF/OREF implants, amputations, nerve compression releases, tendon transfers or joint fusions, we are prepared to help you regain your mobility and your life.
ORTHOPEDIC AND INJURY REHABILITATION
Injuries can happen at any moment—on the playing field, in the workplace, in your car or even in your own home. Without proper diagnosis and timely care, recovery can often become a slow and painful process. Physical therapy uses a variety of treatments and physical exercises to begin the rehabilitation process at the onset of injury or pain. Through these treatments and exercises, physical therapy can efficiently and effectively strengthen your body, reduce pain and prevent future injury.
When daily life is altered due to an injury, accident, chronic medical condition or re-injury, a physical therapist can help get you back to the activities you enjoy. You will be evaluated by a licensed physical therapist to determine range of motion, muscle strength, postural alignment and abnormalities in movement patterns, body mechanics and quality of movement with daily activities.
Following the results of your evaluation, a personalized plan of care will be designed to help you meet your individual recovery needs. Together, we will establish clear goals and begin treatment that will be most effective to your specific injury.
SENIOR REHABILITATION
As your body ages, you may be faced with unique needs. You want to stay active, but health issues and general body changes may prevent that. Age may just be a number, but it also a mindset. The best way to achieve that mindset is by treating the senior body with respect, understanding its unique needs and creating comprehensive care programs that support the healthiest, most active quality of life possible. We can help you manage edema, soreness, stiffness, and general weakness before they cause falls and other more dangerous situations. In order to maintain functional independence, we can assist you with physical and occupational therapy, reconditioning exercises, vestibular rehabilitation, balance training, gait training and fitness programs. These therapies and exercises also assist in preventing and treating orthopedic disorders, stroke/CVA, arthritis, osteoporosis and so much more.
Balance and Fall Prevention Program
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among adults age 65 and over in the United States. They report one in four people 65 and older fall each year.
Falls are not a normal part of the aging process and the fear of falling can contribute to further lack of mobility, increased risk of falling and a diminished quality of life. Physical therapists are an integral part of the healthcare team who can help to prevent falls and identify individuals that are at an increased risk of falling.
Most falls are caused by a combination of risk factors. Some of these risk factors include a history of a previous fall, a sedentary lifestyle, poor overall health, decreased strength, lack of endurance, impaired balance, limited flexibility, joint pain, arthritis, home hazards, poor footwear, inappropriate use of an assistive device or lack of confidence in your mobility.
Frederick Sport and Spine takes a holistic approach to evaluating you and addressing your specific needs. We will perform a comprehensive evaluation which includes looking at your balance, strength, ROM, gait and mobility as well as identifying your lifestyle risks and environmental hazards. An individualized program will then be developed based on the findings and we will implement strategies to decrease your fall risk at home and in the community.
Once you are ready for discharge from physical therapy, you will be given a comprehensive exercise program to continue at home. We will also provide you with recommendations for appropriate community and educational resources that can assist you in maintaining and improving your level of fitness and quality of life.
